ASSISTANT OPERATOR, GRADE II-A (WATER TREATMENT) 

 

The Village of Nyack Board of Water Commissioners is seeking applicants for the position of ASSISTANT OPERATOR, GRADE II-A (WATER TREATMENT) 

 This is a 7/24 rotating shift position of routine, technical work involving responsibility during the absence of the Chief Operator or, while assigned to a specific shift, for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of a Type A potable water treatment plant. 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: 

  • Operates pumps, valves, motors and related machinery and equipment.
  • Performs maintenance work and makes minor repairs to machinery and equipment.
  • Records readings of meters, gauges and scales.
  • Regulates and adjusts chlorinators.
  • Washes filter beds and settling basins.
  • Takes samples of water for testing.
  • Makes necessary tests for control of plant operation.
  • Keeps a log of plant operations and related records.
  • Performs custodial duties in connection with the maintenance of water treatment plant buildings and grounds.
  • May supervise the work of laborers and other subordinate employees; May assist in the instruction of trainees.

 FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Good knowledge of the practices used and the equipment required in the operation and maintenance of a Type A potable water treatment plant.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and applications of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as they relate to water purification.
  • Ability to operate and repair pumps, valves and related mechanical and electrical equipment ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of plant operation.
  • Ability to read, understand and record data from gauges, scales and meters; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude; alertness and dependability.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Possession of a valid Grade II-A or higher (Water Treatment) certificate is preferable but we will train and qualify the right candidate.

Certificate qualifications will require:

  1. Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma
  2. Successful completion of appropriate level water treatment operator courses 
  3. One (1) year of acceptable operating experience at a water treatment plant with facilities for filtration.

 Special Requirements:

  • This is a Civil Service position. Candidate must pass a future civil service test to retain the position.
  • Must maintain the Grade II-A (Water Treatment) certificate throughout the course of employment.
  • Candidate must be a resident of Rockland County, New York.

LABORER DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is unskilled work of a routine nature. The work requires a variety of physical labor tasks and light maintenance duties and is performed under direct supervision. During periods of emergency work, employees in this class may be required to work at other than normal working hours and may be required to operate motor equipment. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Uses a shovel, pick, rake, scythe, axe, saws and other common hand tools as required for particular tasks; Mows and rakes grass using hand and power operated machines; Removes snow and ice and sands and salts walks and streets; Collects and disposes of rubbish; Does routine painting and performs other similar maintenance work; Weeds gardens and assists in planting flowers and shrubbery; May operate motor equipment on special assignment. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Ability to read and understand simple oral and written directions; ability to use a variety of common hand tools. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: No formal education, training or experience required; however, requirements of the New York State Labor Law must be met and administered by the appointing authority. NOTE: When required to operate a motor vehicle under special or emergency conditions, must possess a license appropriate for the vehicle operated.
