Happy Mother's Day 2020

On this Mother’s Day, I would like to invoke the memory of the late Anna Jarvis. Jarvis led the movement to establish a national holiday recognizing the hard-work and sacrifices of mothers. Her life story is particularly powerful, as she served as a field nurse during the American Civil War, tending to soldiers from both sides. Just as Jarvis worked to protect those afflicted by the violence of war, today many mothers in our community heed a similar call to action. Essential workers, healthcare providers, and first responders are not only some of the most brave and empathetic in our town, many are also proud mothers who guide the future of our community. Without the commitment of brave and caring mothers, both at home and in the field, our community would be lost amidst the confusion and tragedy of this pandemic. We owe them a debt of gratitude today.

I encourage everyone in Nyack, and beyond, to recognize the exemplary compassion of moms in this challenging time. Together, with the aid of mothers, grandmothers, and all caretakers in our community; we will resolve to be Nyack Strong.  Enjoy this day and celebrate with your family, whether in person or while socially distancing. I’d like to leave you with a quote from the great essayist Washington Irving:

“The love of a mother is never exhausted. It never changes - it never tires - it endures through all; in good repute, in bad repute. In the face of the world's condemnation, a mother's love still lives on.” - Washington Irving
